SMB calculates the length of service for an employee, as shown on the employee dashboard, in one of two ways.
The default mode is to use the information from the employee’s Job History record to calculate the total length of service, excluding any gaps in service or records marked as non-working time. This mode totals the length of each job record and adds this together to create a total length of service.
The second, simpler mode, is a straightforward calculation from the employee’s start date (or restart date if one has been set) to the current day. This does not take into consideration any breaks in the job history or non-working records.
To illustrate: Employee X has a start date of the 1st February 2020 and their record is being viewed on the 1st February 2025. Their job history has a 6 month gap in 2022 where they took a break from employment.
In the first mode, SMB will calculate their length of service as 4 years and 6 months, taking the 6 month break into account. In the second mode, the calculation would be 5 years.
To switch between the two modes, click on the “Administration” option on the main menu, then click on the “Length of Service Calculation Settings” link in the “Employee Information” pod.
On the page shown, use the dropdown list to select which method to use and click the “Save Settings” button to store the changes.
